Calls for the 25th Amendment Rise Over Trump's Handling of Iranian Conflict (Broadcast)
Over 70 lawmakers have called for Trump’s removal from office under the 25th Amendment, according to NBC News. The controversy began when President Trump posted an expletive-laden threat towards Iran on Easter Sunday, telling Iranians to open the Strait of Hormuz or face dire consequences, ending with praise to Allah.
Both Republicans and former Trump allies have joined Democratic calls for the president’s removal from office, including conservative political activists and commentators Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens. Former Republican Representative of Georgia, Majorie Taylor Green, responded on X to the president’s statement, saying, “25th AMENDMENT!!! Not a single bomb has dropped on America. We cannot kill an entire civilization. This is evil and madness.” Former CIA Director John Brennan told MS Now that he believes “the 25th Amendment was written with Trump in mind,” calling the president’s actions against Iran a “disastrous pursuit.”
The 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution details the procedures for addressing presidential disability and succession. It’s comprised of four sections, the fourth of which empowers the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet members to declare the president unfit to serve.
The calls for the president’s removal come on the heels of many mixed feelings regarding the controversial first years of his presidency. As of now, no formal move has been issued to remove Trump from office. The 25th Amendment has never successfully been invoked, and it seems unlikely to be used against Trump considering the strong support of his vice president and Cabinet.
